This morning I was rolling my work bag behind me, carrying my blackberry and coffee in the other hand. I’m walking towards the door of my building and there’s a guy approaching from the walkway to my right fixing to get to the door before me.
“Awesome!” I say in my head. “Please use the door on the left because that will be so much easier for me to follow you in.” (The left hand side is auto-assisted, the right is not).
He opened the right-hand door and let it close behind him.
Are you kidding? “Wow,” I said outloud. And that’s where it fell apart.
I let go of my bag to pull open the left-hand door and the guy is turning around saying, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize you were coming in this way.”
I felt like crap. I told him I was having a shit morning (true – I think I just got strep throat for my birthday) and I was being catty (also, true in the moment). He was holding the elevator, asking what floor I need and saying that it was incredibly rude of him.
Which it was.
BUT, I guess you just never know the real intentions of random people you come across. Are there are a lot of truly rude, obnoxious and stupid people in the world? Of course! Is it worth it for me to bring myself down to that level and look like a total bitch without really understanding what’s going on with other people? At this point, I really don’t think so.
